Cost-per-Use

Cost-per-Use of Our Outdoor Gear. An Inverse of Our Quality of Life?

Comments
By Marilyn Trout | May 02, 2013
I came across an article by Brendan Leonard who has a pithy blog about “the relentless pursuit of the everyman's, and every woman's, adventure.” Whether planned or spontaneous, bucket list or daily grind, I must admit this “pursuit of adventure” runs deep within every fiber of my being....

Retooling Masters’ Gears

Comments
By Marilyn Trout | February 22, 2013
The key to good coaching, actually key to life too, goes far beyond knowledge. Adding wisdom and experience to the scientific foundation of the training program takes it to a whole new level, especially when “life” enters the equation. Certainly, this may be the most difficult or delicate part of the mix to work through since “life” is synonymous with “change.” ...

Shifting Gears With Colin Funk - It's Never Too Late to Reach Your Peak

Comments
By Marilyn Trout | February 19, 2013
Recently, I responded to an athlete who met up with an untimely cold just before heading down to Louisville, Kentucky for the 2013 World Masters Cyclocross Championships. Colin Funk spent most of his life in a pair of running shoes until his early forties when he swapped them out for some pedals. When he was 16, he won the 1500 metres at the Ontario Provincial Championships and now meets with success again with his road and cyclocross bikes in Master C 50-59 age group....

3Ps to Rekindling Motivation

Comments
By Marilyn Trout | February 01, 2013
After I received a note from a reader who was unable to get motivated about spending any time in the saddle, it got me thinking about what I do when my energy plug is pulled. For me, finding simplicity in foundational principles gives me an immediate boost for regaining productivity. Whether coaching or life, removing distraction and complication clears my mind and relaxes my body to reset the energy levels for the goals that lay ahead. For many athletes, the hardest part of training is resting....

Never Too Old to Shift Gears: World Champion Carl Grove

Comments
By Marilyn Trout | January 14, 2013
In the late 60s, I came back to Elkhart, Indiana and rediscovered my Schwinn Super Sport. I met up with some young cyclists, ages 17 to 22, as I was the old guy in my 40s, and went at it tooth and nail not knowing anything about training methods. Two rules became very important to me then and, throughout the years, have become even more important. They are the reasons I give to the question, How do you manage to ride like you do at an advanced age?...
